Days passed without incident and the team was feeling restless. It was Saturday afternoon and Elisabeth was pacing back and forth in her living room, anxious. She had secretly done her own sweeps on the outskirts of town and had only eliminated less than a handful of the undead. She dumped them off at The Creamery, sneaking in through the back and stuffing the bodies inside the furnaces. She knew Team Aguilar and Team Churchill were arguing with each other about the laziness in not identifying which kills were theirs, and her additions didnât help matters. She should have said something, but she didnât want anyone to know about her sweeps and it was a little funny to watch Luke Aguilar get his feathers ruffled.
Her phone rang and she answered, expecting it to be Margo. âHello?â she said.
âItâs about time we get together, donât you think?â Elisabeth could hear the smile in Todd Wilkinâs voice.
âI agree.â
âDo you have anything youâd like to do?â
âSomething active,â Elisabeth replied. Realizing what she said, she hastily added, âLike bowling.â
âLike bowling,â Todd said slowly. âIâve got something better. Put on your workout gear and Iâll be there in an hour.â
Sixty minutes later, Todd was driving Elisabeth to a place he described as being small, but helped him clear his mind. They arrived and parked in front of a brick building with large, glass windows covered with banners bearing the business name, classes offered, and schedule.
He was beaming. âI love this gym,â he said. âItâs a mixed martial arts gym, the only one in town. Itâs bigger than what it looks like on the outside. You canât get more active than this.â
Elisabeth said nothing and followed him inside. He had been right; it was bigger than she initially thought. It was a large space with ceilings that were twenty feet high. Near the door was a seating area and cubby holes that reminded her of kindergarten where she and Margo had hung up their backpacks and coats. Todd pointed to a cubby, instructed her to take off her shoes, and she obliged. âYou donât want to carry nasty germs in here,â he said.
The floor was covered with thick, blue mats that felt smooth and plush underneath her bare feet. There was a large, metal rack that held several uppercut bags, Thai bags, and the standard punching bags. A few spots were currently occupied by sweaty men and women throwing combinations of jabs, right and left hooks, and crossover punches.
The rest of the mat was free of equipment, but on the outskirts was a small set of bleachers for additional onlookers and for people to toss their gym bags that wouldnât fit in the cubby holes. There was a full-sized boxing ring as well as, to Elisabethâs surprise, a cage in the shape of a hexagon. It was a great looking gym, almost as nice as the one where she trained for the Zombie Response Team. She hadnât told Todd yet that she had earned her purple
